Sing Workshop and preparation for Town Centre Nativity Event | 24th November 2013

On Tuesday had a workshop looking at dramatizing musical numbers like CATS.This was led by Elise, drawing on her depth of experience in these great stage productions. The chairman was particularly relieved to be reassured not to be deterred by scary musical signature keys - in drama productions the musicians should adapt to the actor's musical range. We intend to advance this type of session in our scheduled programme later next year.

Also we prepared for our forthcoming participation in Folkestone's town centre's Nativity Event on Saturday December 14th from 10.30am. We are looking forward to depicting dramatically St Joseph, the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Mother of Jesus, and other characters integral to the greatest story ever told do be there if you can - and please feel free to contact us if you would like to take part with us.

StageOne’s first read through of major Cinderella scenes (10th November 2013)

On Tuesday StageOne had their first read through major scenes of the Cinderella play that Michael Hale had written specially for StageOne. We are still giggling and laughing at some of the jokes and gags that were cunningly written in that you will not see them coming until they hit you.

We still need hep from others. Let others know! Please be in touch with us. We always aim to be all-inclusive, but we need commitment. That's all we ask - and folk's enthusiasm and help. Roger Smith. 01303-259896.

StageOne performs acts from "The Imaginary Invalid" by Molière | 5th November 2013

On Tuesday members of StageOne took to acting out selected scenes from Molière’s "The Imaginary Invalid" and had some great fun in the process. It was a really funny play with the central character Argan playing this supposed invalid when in fact there is nothing wrong with him except for effects of the concoctions of medicine by the quack doctor, Mr. Purgon. This is the second or may be third play by Molière that StageOne has read.

Class acting and Script Writing Workshops | 29th October 2013

Last Tuesday StageOne explored Class acting where different scenarios were explored including a former British army sergeant as a driving instructor teaching an elderly pupil, and two Elizabethan gents trying to move a piano and end up having a duel. This was all a lot of fun even though many scenarios were not intended as comic acts.

The second workshop revisited script writing. Various points were looked including the aim of a script i.e. what it was intending to do such as get laughs, make you think and so on. Other points were length of scripts and not making them too long or drag on with regard to individual sketches. Collecting ideas for scripts was another major point.

The “Psychologist’s Chair” and Script Writing Workshops | September 17th 2013

On Tuesday StageOne had a very interesting “Psychologist’s Chair” with Roger Smith where everyone looked at disabilities and how we as people react to them and how those people who have a disability may act or be treated. It was very interesting and thought provoking because most of us will readily label others as disabled and think they have a problem such as hearing or blindness when in fact they don’t.

StageOne performed “The Ambitious Son” at Church in the Park (August 4th 2013)

On Sunday StageOne went off to Canterbury to take part in the Church in the Park service led by Pastors from St Andrew’s URC Canterbury. StageOne gave a superb performance of a modernised version of the Prodical Son story that was specially written for the occasion by one of their members. It featured a mix of modern times and history and well timed pre-recorded material. The performance was very well received by all who gathered in the park mainly because we can all relate to parts of the story and that we are all welcome back in the end.

StageOne performs acts from Tartuffe by Molière | July 9th 2013

On Tuesday members of StageOne took to acting out selected scenes from Molière’s Tartuffe and had some great fun in the process. Some of the scenes included Act 1 Scene 4 where Orgon returns from his trip out of town and wishes to know how the family has been. He completely ignores all details concerning Elmire and only listens to what Dorine says about Tartuffe. Another scene was Act 2 scene 2 where Dorine makes enormous fun of Orgon, much to his annoyance.

StageOne reads Tartuffe, or The Impostor by Molière (May 14th 2013)

On Tuesday Michael Hale lead StageOne through Tartuffe, or The Impostor which is one of the most famous theatrical comedies by Molière. The characters known as Tartuffe, Valère, and Dorine are considered among the greatest classical theatre roles.
The play opens with the Orgon family is up in turmoil because Orgon and his mother, Madame Pernelle, have fallen under the influence of Tartuffe, a pious fraud. Tartuffe pretends to be pious and to speak with divine authority which has led to Orgon and his mother taking no action on any event without first consulting him. Orgon himself has a single-minded obsession with Tartuffe which is shown clearly Act I, Scene5.

Core Skills Workshop and May & Ray Special | April 30th 2013

On Tuesday Mavis and Ray Roe ran a stage and theatre themed quiz which tested StageOne’s knowledge of types of stage, part of the stage such as the orchestral pit, curtains calls, and the various roles and positions there are in any stage and theatre performance.

In the second half, Sue Roe was very creative with here Core Skills workshop and help StageOne examine the funny and scarey side to performing. This was all about how one presents themselves on stage by facial expression, voices, and how one moves about. A happy person may have a spring in their step. An evil villain may creep about slowly and with stealth.

Magic Workshop (22nd April 2013)

StageOne had a very informative “magic” workshop with John on Tuesday. Magic can be used for misdirection and simple tricks but also be applied to the stage such as adding the unexpected such as an object moving by itself or add additional effects to a scene such as someone disappearing in front of the audience.

Michael Frayn's Noises Off - Play Reading Workshop With Michael Hale

StageOne had a really enjoyable play reading workshop on Tuesday. Michael Hale introduced StageOne to Michael Frayn's Noises Off. StageOne really enjoyed themselves and many times laughed at the actors in the play as they struggled to get to grips with the roles on "Nothing On" and at the constant interuptions by the playwright. StageOne will continue with rest of Act 1 and start Act 2 in our next play reading workshop.
Here is abit more about "Noises Off" play.

The plot for Noises Off is simple - a play upon on the concept of a play within a play, which in this case is a dreadful sex-comedy titled "Nothing On". This is the sort of play in which young girls run about in their underwear, old men drop their trousers, and many doors continually open and shut. "Nothing On" is set in "a delightful 16th-century posset mill" that has been converted to a modern dwelling for which renters are solicited; the fictional playwright is appropriately named Robin Housemonger. Each of the three acts of "Noises Off" contains a performance of the first act of "Nothing On"

Puss in Boots Pantomime Saturday Evening 23rd February 2013

Our fourth and final performance of our Puss in Boots Pantomime was another enjoyable show and we had yet another appreciative audience and even more children and parents helping cheer and boo. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed each scene, including the music numbers “Mambo No 5”, “Bad Guys” and “Holding out for a Hero”. Everyone’s favourite scene must have been Wayne and Chris kidnapping Aunt Hettie and the Princess as Wayne once again got a huge “Cheese Cake in his face. As with each performance the hero triumphed and the baddie got more than he bargained for and so everyone lived happily ever after.
